The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.
This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his offspring.
His child, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's ruling was the potential of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to ask for protection through a embassy office", a statement said.
The court filing highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader President Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will experience a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
He was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. The current president was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The police intervened and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the time, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
