The Life Cycle of a Movement is often characterized by clear stages.

1. The Core Concept

A charismatic leader or figureheads introduce a revolutionary approach pledging a panacea for alienated and vulnerable people.

So here we are. Preparations are underway to storm the compound in Australia. Tensions are rising. Smoke is rising from the out-houses. An isolated player, naked, shivering, the phrase ATTACKING MINDSET smeared across his chest as a statement, has stumbled from the field and is taken aside with discretion to a different team at Derbyshire.

Remember the start, when everything was fresh? The era of early Bazball, of Bazball without brains.

2. The Honeymoon Phase

Cult leaders offer a new start, hope for a future, love, redemption among a group with shared faith in the method.

What was this thing initially? A team united basking in glory. Ink. Muscles. Focus. Elite male wellness energy. Admittedly, England’s players insist they don’t use the label, amusingly because if it doesn’t exist, what exactly did I just watch?

Yet it’s clear what it is. It’s the player executing a stroke so unconventional it’s beyond belief. It’s the excitement of Ben Stokes at his peak, a look that says: pensive Nordic god, rugged appearance, untamed style, truly contemporary you half-expect to notice and find him positioned on the ground shirtless and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s the batsman still being allowed to talk in press conferences, out there looking like a joyful figure formally attired, expressing thoughts like we’re breaking down traditions. Certainly, the energy, for quite a long time, was uplifting.

3. The Growth Phase

Development stage. Cohesion maintained via memorization of mantras. These beliefs are often illogical to prove commitment.

Am I alone? The backlash, the anger, the disappointment after the first Ashes Test defeat feels overblown, too much. The performance was poor during the match, as is typical there. In trying to escape from it, to build a better atmosphere, they are simply replicating their upbringing, creating another a bubble, an exclusive group, but now with a new team and a mentor who wants you to be yourself if you fit the mold.
